For the 2019 Oilskin Wax photo shoot, Styx Mill traveled into the Rakaia River upper catchment area, visiting several high country stations and seeing some spectacular scenery in this remote area of the Southern Alps, South Island, New Zealand
Rakaia River
The Rakaia River is immense and is one of the largest braided rivers in the South Island of New Zealand.
The river is fed from the Southern Alps and travels 150 kilometres, characterised by wide shingle beds, numerous snaking channels and fast flowing water flows. The crystal clear blue waters make it popular for jet boats and it is world famous for its salmon fishing. The river moves in an easterly/south-easterly direction before entering the Pacific Ocean 50 kilometres south of Christchurch.
